SAD-BSP Alliance: In Ferozepur, BSP’s stronghold to benefit SAD(B)

Ferozepur, June 12, 2021: A stronghold of Bahujan Samaj Party in district Ferozepur is likely to benefit the Shiromani Akali Dal(B) in the coming 2022 legislative Assembly elections in Punjab in an alliance.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal has announced on Saturday that his party and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) would fight the 2022 legislative Assembly elections in Punjab in an alliance.

He had said that future elections other than the 2022 state polls will be fought together with the Mayawati-led party. It is a new day in Punjab politics, he said in his address, adding that out of 117 seats, BSP will contest 20 seats, SAD the remaining 97 seats. The seats include seven in Malwa, five in Majha, and eight in Doaba.

But in the case of Malwa, 7 seats in have allotted to BSP, Ferozepur district once considered to be stronghold stand overlooked.

Added here, Mohan Singh Phalianwala representing BSP had twice represented Ferozepur in Parliament Lok Sabha seat in 1992.  Again, in  1996. He got the highest number of votes of 2,64,799 while the Congress got 2,04,889 and other parties 77,107, out of the total polled votes of 7,04,250 votes.

Shiromani Akali Dal Badal and Bahujan Samaj Party were in the alliance in 1996. After that in 1997 Akali Dal left Bahujan Samaj Party and had alliance with Bharti Janata Party (BJP) but now in the changed circumstances with break of alliance with BJP, SAD and BSP had joined hands to fight 2022 Assembly elections.

Despite the fact that BSP has represented twice from Ferozepur but this time, not a single seat has been considered for the comings elections.  But now with SAD-BSP alliance, the benefit is likely to go the SAD. Only the time will tell as to how BSP leadership and supporters honour the alliance status.  Anyhow, BSP with the support of Akalis, it hopes to have a major impact on the elections. Will SAD-BSP alliance take Sukhbir Badal to Punjab CM’s Chair? Only the coming time will decide.
