Ferozepur, March 30, 2023: The problem of the illicit liquor trade in Punjab is a longstanding issue with hundreds of people losing their lives by drinking spurious liquor. In this context, the Ferozepur police and BSF in a joint operation have unearthed illicit liquor trade in border village near the banks of Sutlej River and recovered illicit liquor.

The illicit liquor trade goes unabated in the border villages being cheaper and affordable as compared to regular whisky for the poor, who continue to consume without bothering for its adverse effect on health which sometimes claim lives also.

Giving this information, Randhir Kumar, SP(D) said, the police have adopted a zero tolerance stand over illegal liquor extraction trade going on in the district. He said, such illegal liquor trade in the border villages is also a direct loss to the exchequer. The increasing sale of illicit liquor also affects the business of licensed liquor vends in the region, which hit the revenue of liquor contractors.

In its latest operation, 40 kg of illicit liquor was recovered in a tube in the area of village Ghazni wala of Lakho Ke Behram police station in Guruharsahai Sub-division. The recovered liquor was reported to be destroyed on the ground to avoid its misuse. A case under Sections 61/114 under Excise Act has been registered and further investigations are on.
