Contractual employees go on indefinite strike, bus services hit in Ferozepur

Ferozepur, May 19, 2022: Demanding regularization of their services, contractual employees of government-run buses by Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, and PRTC, under the banner of the Contract Worker Union, have gone on an indefinite strike from today onwards and the strike hit the government bus services badly.

All the around 8,000 contractual employees at  27 depots in the state – 18 Punjab Roadways and 9 PRTC Depots – were on strike.

Presently, the drivers and conductors are being paid Rs.18,000 and Rs.16,000 per month.

The members of the Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, and PRTC Contract Workers Union have given a chakka jam call to mark their protest against the state government for ignoring their long-pending demands. which has forced them to go on strike as their voice was ignored, said Resham Singh President, Contract Workers Union.

Meanwhile, passengers faced inconveniences as the majority of government buses were not operational today. However, government buses that are being operated by regular employees and private buses are plying on the roads.

Despite various meetings and assurance to regularize the services of employees but the Punjab Government did not find out any solution to resolve the matter to date, forcing the employees to go on a strike, he added. They accused the government of making attempts to eliminate government transport services.

Instead of meeting their demands, the government is making attempts to suppress the voice of agitating employees by registering false cases against them, the employees alleged.
