Despite increased manual vigil, mobiles and banned items recovered from jail inmates
Ferozepur, March 31, 2022: On Wednesday, four packets wrapped in white colour tape containing banned items and two mobiles during the search operation from jail inmates were recovered, despite increased manual vigil at the entry points. During the current year, 122 mobiles and various other items have been recovered from the jail premises and inmates.
A few days back, Jails Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa had said a trial of jammers is on in some jails but there is opposition from the civilian population. Further, in some jails, jammers do not cover the entire premises and are ineffective in barracks located far off. However, we have increased manual vigil in jails, besides better frisking of inmates. This has led to an increase in the recovery of mobiles.
Even as the recovery of mobile phones from inmates in Punjab jail has almost doubled in three years, the Department of Jails is struggling to find ways to stop their use inside the premises.
The recovery of banned items from jail inmates, smuggled in, through various operandi, during meeting calls, or thrown from outside the jail by unidentified persons over the high wall, has put a question mark on the security arrangements. The purpose of keeping the prisoners away from the outside world on a sentence by the court is also lost.
As per the information, on opening the 4 packets thrown inside the jail, 51 sachets of tobacco were found. On March 30, two mobiles with batteries and SIM cards during the search operation conducted by Sukhjnder Singh, Assistant Superintendent, were recovered from Jatinder Singh and Deepak Kumar under trial prisoners.
Both the undertrials already in the jail and one unidentified person have been booked under Sections 42, 52-A of the Prisons Act at the City police station, and further investigations are on with Amandeep Singh, IO.
