Recovery of around 1,500 mobiles from Punjab jails in one year exposes jail security chinks

Ferozepur, November 14, 2020:  The most wanted banned item in the jail is mobile and the frequent recovery of two mobiles during the search operations from the jail gangster inmates, has put the security arrangements under the scanner.

The high rising building along with the four-walls one side and open from the back and one side have posed a security threat to the jail as there had been an incident of throwing mobiles and other banned items over the walls. More than 1,500 mobiles has been recovered from the jails in Punjab for one year. Sukhinder Singh Randhawa, Jail Minister Punjab during his visit to Ferozepur has given the indicating of shifting of 161 years old jail out of the populated area over 100 acres of land with ultra-modern infrastructure

On November 13, 2020,  during the search operation, two mobiles were recovered from gangster prisoner under trial Boby Malhotra alias Sagar of Vivo touch screen with batter and SIM Card Jio and another from gangster prisoner Akul Kumar alias Khatri of Nokia key-pad with batter and SIM Card.

Jail Minister has also said that installing of jammer was not possible as involves a huge financial burden.  The government has decided to control mobile networks in the jails so that prisoners may not be able to use the mobiles and the government is in touch with the various mobile operating companies.

A case under the Prisons Act has been registered against both the prisoners on the complaint of Sukhwant Singh Assistant Superintendent and investigations are on by Kuldeep Singh appointed as IO in this case.
