Ferozepur, August 28, 2021:  Maternal death reviewed will help to identify missed opportunities and plan interventions, said Civil Surgeon, Dr.Rajinder Arora while holding the maternal death review meeting. The meeting thoroughly examined the causes and circumstances of the deaths during childbirth and discussed in detail so that such situations could be avoided in the future.

As many as 480 maternal deaths in 2018-19 and 370 in 2019-20 have been reported across Punjab. Among the districts witnessing high maternal deaths are Ludhiana — 59 in 2018-19 and 65 in 2019-20, Amritsar — 62 in 2018-19 and 46 in 2019-20, Jalandhar — 39 in 2018-19 and 27 in 2019-20, Tarn Taran — 32 in 2018-19 and 18 in 2019-20, Ferozepur — 24 in 2018-19 and 21 in 2019-20, Muktsar — 24 in 2018-19 and 15 in 2019-20, among others.

There is ground breaking progress in recent years in reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by 77 per cent from 556 per 1,00,000 live births in 1990 to 130 in 2016 and present MMR is below the target and hope to achieve he sustainable development goal of an MMR below 70 by 2030.

Each year in India, roughly 28 million women experience pregnancy and 26 million have a live birth. Of these, an estimated 67,000 maternal deaths and one million newborn deaths occur each year. In addition, millions more women and newborns suffer pregnancy and birth related ill-health. Thus, pregnancy-related mortality and morbidity continues to have a huge impact on the lives of Indian women and their newborns.

Dr Arora said, “Most of these deaths could be prevented with high-quality care.  However, accurate information on how many women died, where they died and how they died is often lacking in most of the cases.

There is a need to contribute better information for action by promoting routine identification and timely notification of maternal deaths, review of maternal deaths and implementation and monitoring of steps to prevent similar deaths in the future, he added.

He further asked the gynecologists and medical officers present on the occasion to prepare Iron Folic Acid Protocol and Calcium Protocol which could be disseminated in the health institutions of the district and directed the present ANMs and Asha Workers to ensure complete pre-birth care of all the pregnant women.

The Civil Surgeon also asked all the senior medical officers to properly monitor the maternal and child health services in their respective areas and provide necessary training to the staff from time to time.

On this occasion, SMO Dr. Ranjiv Bains, Dr. Balveer Kumar, Dr. Sandeep Gill, Gynecologist Dr. Pooja, Dr. Amandeep Kaur, CEO Deepak Kumar, Mass Media Officer Ranjiv Sharma, Vikas Kalra and other officers / staff of the department were present.
