Rana Sodhi flagged off free government bus travel for women at Ferozepur
Ferozepur, April 1, 2021: With the approval of the Cabinet, the women in Punjab will get the facility to travel free of cost in all government buses within the state from April 1 and Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Cabinet Minister Punjab, on Thursday, today flagged off government bus boarded by a number of women, from district administrative complex. Gurpal Singh Chahal, DC Ferozepur was also present on this occasion.
As per Census 2011, Punjab has a population of 2.77 crores – males 1,46,39,465 and female 1,31,03,873 – and the scheme is likely to benefit over 1.31 crore women and girls across the state. This scheme is likely to reduce drop-out of girl students in schools because of the high cost of daily transport and a big relief to working women who travel considerable distances to their workplaces besides leading reduction in pollution, accidents and vehicular congestion on the roads.
Rana Sodhi said it is an important step taken by the Punjab government for allowing women to travel in government buses and termed as an effort of the government to empower women and girls in the State.
One of the women travelling in the bus going for an eye operation from Jaitu, appreciated the decision of the government while another woman said, the government should also do something for educated unemployed youths.
