16 mobiles including iPhone, ‘zarda’, ‘bidis’ seized from Ferozepur jail

Ferozepur, December 12, 2023:  Following the inputs, the alert jail staff led by Rishavpal Singh and Nirmaljit Singh, Assistant Superintendents, immediately conducted the search operation and recovered 16 mobiles including one iPhone, and other banned items like 65 bundles of ‘bidis’ and 26 packets of tobacco from the prisoners, lying unclaimed and four packets tossed in the jail over the high walls. The total recovery of mobiles during the current year has gone up to 472 besides various other banned items.

As per the information, 2 mobiles – one totally in a rotten condition –  were recovered from the prisoners – Prince and Mohinder Partap, who are already in jail, in the 4 packets thrown from outside the jail, between tower number 7 and 8,  by unknown persons, 36 packets of ‘zarda’, 65 bundles of ‘bidis’ and one mobile without SIM card, one mobile and charger from prisoners Manvinder Singh alias Nikka, Baljinder Singh and Thomas from ward number 4, chakki number 4 and 11 mobiles and one iPhone from furnaces in old barrack number 8.

Regular recovery of mobiles and other banned items from inside the jail, clearly speaks of lax security arrangements in and outside the jail which is open from one side and another side touching high-rising residential buildings.

The mobiles were reportedly being used by the jail inmates, to easily access to stay in touch with their nears and dears outside and carry out their legal and illegal activities by passing on the directions to their counterparts.  Thus the purpose of keeping the criminals away from the outer world as punishment is lost. The prisons are known for being safe havens from the criminals and their handlers and this menace has now spread to almost all the jails. Role of some jail officials in facilitating the entry of mobiles and other items for money can’t be ruled out,” sources said.

A case under Prisons Act Section 52-A against a trial prisoner and unknown persons and further investigations are with Gurmail Singh, IO.
