As I stumbled while having a stroll through Chandigarh’s sister- the Shivalik Hills, a thought suddenly raced through my being. Amidst the backdrop of the mesmerizing hill station of Barog, I was struck by an utmost threatening thought of the fatal apocalypse waiting in the winds to strike Mother Earth. Such is predicted to be the intensity of this catastrophe that it might also prove to be fatal for all the units encompassed in the biosphere. Never has the future of humanity appeared to be in a greater danger than it is today.

The never-ceasing feckless actions of humanity have witnessed disastrous consequences. We have placed our ephemeral pleasures of development at the cost of Mother Nature first. This mistake has made us unknowingly relegate environmental conservation to the last spot in our list of our priorities. As a direct result, terms like Global Warming and Climate Change have become the talking points of the town. These words have amassed such great popularity that they have become the international chartbuster buzzwords. By making their presence felt even in the most microscopic aspects of our life, these infamous terms are the greatest threats to the entire human race, in the present time now.

But, the question that perennially arises is whether an individual can make a gargantuan change in the terms of environmental conservation. Certainly, such atomic habits are only destined to bring about microscopic changes. However, these atomic habits are much more progressive than responding to the big challenge with a jejune response. When these are practiced regularly and on a large scale collectively, we can bring a massive Renaissance in the state of our deteriorating environment. Each one of us commands the capacity to be an environmentalist. Even the rag pickers on the streets can be an inspiration for us. Environmental conservation needs to be extended beyond air-conditioned conference rooms now. Environmental conservation needs to be moulded into a wider social change, to reach every household. This will ensure that it reaches a larger scale. Each of us needs to adopt and inculcate a major lifestyle change in this direction towards environmental conservation. This World Environment Day 2023, one must pledge to imbibe a positive change each month for the very quintessence of our life to remain existent on Earth. Together, we can surely emerge triumphant- For Humanity, for our Planet Earth and for our own selves.
