Two packets with mobiles, banned items lobbed inside Central Jail in Ferozepur 20 bundles of ‘bidis’, 10 sachets of tobacco, one pack of cigarette recovered Ferozepur, September 24, 2023:  The security of Central Jail has been compromised with the high rising boundary walls at many places, from where racketeers are known to throw in tennis balls or packets stuffed with narcotics, mobile handsets, sim cards and batteries and other contraband material for inmates. Four mobiles and other prohibited items have been found in the two packets lobbed inside the jail over the high walls of Central Jail in Ferozepur.  The recovery of mobiles – the most wanted item by the prisoners for illegal purposes – and other banned items continue to recover from the barracks and in possession of inmates despite tight security arrangements at the entry points having more than 200 security cops.  On Saturday, the recovery of three mobiles, 20 bundles of ‘bidis’, 10 sachets of tobacco, one pack of cigarette from two packets thrown over the jail walls and one mobile during the search operation, on a tip-off by Assistant Superintendent, Sukhjinder Singh from under trial prisoner Gurpreet Singh, has exposed the security arrangements outside the jail premises. Earlier, the jail staff had seized 320 mobiles during the current year in various search operations carried out in the barracks of the jail.  Sometime back, an elaborate proposal was also made to shift the jail premises from the existing place to outside the city near Khai Pheme Ki from security point of view but the same could not be materialized due to paucity of funds. The regular recovery of mobiles from inside the jail for use by the prisoners, despite the three layer security needs to be probed in-depth at a high level. However, it is added here that the mobile recovery and its usage investigation is a great problem as the concerned prisoner has to be taken on remand, all the time from the jail which is not free from security point of view and in majority of the cases, the matter ends with the registration of the case under Prisons Act. According to jail officials, due to the open area outside the jail on the back and other side touching the high rising residential buildings, sometimes the packets and balls are also thrown containing the banned items.  However, the area is being covered by deploying extra security staff.  But there is no police post inside the jail so far.
