Ferozepur, October 10, 2015: The disturbing time due to farmer’s agitation through rail roko is yet to become normal as they are angry with the attitude of the government.

The farmers protest supported by eight Kissan Unions, which initially gave call for two days rail roko programme extended for two days, today has further extended till Monday getting no response from the government on their demands.

The farmers are demanding Rs.40,000 per acre compensation for cotton crop loss in whitefly attack, a minimum Rs.4500 per quintal remuneration for basmati varieties and Rs.20000 each for the agrarian crisis-hit farm workers.

Samjhauta Express was among 75 trains traveling through Punjab that were cancelled due to local agitation. The train was cancelled due to local agitation and Indian authorities had informed their Pakistani counterparts about it in advance.

In a communiqué from the railways, the Samjhauta Express which runs between India and Pakistan, could be cancelled. However, the position will be cleared only after having a clarification from the Ministry on 11th October, said Anuj Parkash, DRM.

He also said, the Samjhauta Express is not on the tracks because of sitting on dharna by the protesters.

Since the farmers of Malwa cotton belt are affected due to damage of crop, the impact of rail roko was mostly in this belt, causing lot of inconvenience to the public.  Sources said, the estimated cost of the railways would be Rs.100 crores per day while there is no official announcement on this account.
