NRI PSs helping for redressal of complaints – all 177 NRI complaints during 2015 stand settled in Ferozepur
Ferozepur, February 17, 2016 : Ferozepur NRI Police Station has proved a stroke of luck with the speedy hassle-free redressal of all the 177 complaints received during 2015.
Added here, in Punjab, the NRI Police Stations were set up during 2008 under a separate wing headed by DGP to ensure fairness and transparency. In addition, an SP/NRI Affairs is also posted at Police Headquarters for monitoring grievances and complaints of the NRIs. Initially, the NRI Police Stations have been established by clubbing two-three districts depending upon the volume of work. Presently, the NRI Police Stations are working at Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Nawanshar, Kapurthala, Moga, SAS Nagar and Ferozepur.
Since the persons of Indian origin residing abroad and NRIs face the constraint of inability to be physically present at all times in India and have short time at their disposal during visit to India on account of which they are not able to follow up their personal cases relating to their property issues and other matters in India, mostly because of procedural delays in inquiries conducted by the police and court cases.
In Ferozepur, NRI Police Stations, the cases of Moga, Ferozepur and Fazilka areas are examined under the tutelage of Rajbir Singh, SHO.
Speaking to this correspondent, Rajbir Singh said, during 2015, all the 177 complaints received were settled.
Talking about the nature of cases, he said, in majority of the cases, the issues raised are related to property followed by marital disputes and family affairs.
He further said, that in many of the Indian states and regions, marriage of a son or a daughter abroad is taken to be a status symbol. Sometimes such marriages are taken as an easy way out to enter a foreign country for a comfortable life and lucrative future. Sometimes these foreign dreams come at a cost of innocent lives and the future of the spouses who travel to a foreign land along with these NRIs.
SHO said, in some cases they do not even have to travel abroad to get harassed as their dreams get shattered while they are still in India. In the eagerness of not to let go of such lucrative marriage offer, the families totally ignore even the common cautions that are observed in traditional matchmaking.
In all such cases, the parents hardly bothers for verification before solemnizing of marriage and ultimately approach to the NRI police stations. Likewise, the proper also becomes the cause of dispute while residing at the foreign land, added Rajbir Singh.
SHO said, during 2015, 15 cases were registered of different natures – 5 relating to property while 4 of marital dispute. He admitted that in NRI cases there is problem in investigation as the alleged accused are settled abroad and sometime, they are declared as proclaimed offender (PO) but majority of the cases are registered under section 420. However, with the setting up of NRI Wing, the police have been able to tighten the noose on the fraudulent people.
He however, appealed to the parents to go in for proper verification to avoid trapped in deceptive matrimony with overseas Indians.
