Ferozepur, July, 24, 2022:  Social media is now a day considered the fifth pillar of democracy but we can take preventive measures to help minimize the chances of being a victim ourselves of ‘Identity Theft’.  Few months back, there had been ‘identity theft’ in Ekta Colony also in six locked houses in a single night on getting information on social media and making a recce of the area by the professional thieves.

Rinku Grover, President, Municipal Council appealed to the people especially the young generation to stop sharing their status on social media to give  a clue of the status of your house for easy entry to steal the valuables.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person’s personal identifying information, like their name, identifying number, or credit card number, without their permission, to commit fraud or other crimes. The term identity theft was coined in 1964. Social media was introduced primarily as a means of communication to align with long-lost buddies and to share personal thoughts, ideas, and insights, but with the gradual increase of social media users, there has been a minor shift of interest in the active audience on platforms from content sharing to breach of private information.

Rinku Grover, President, Municipal Council, Ferozepur – while meeting the residents of Kanshi Nagri, to review the locking of colony with the gates when the thefts in the locked houses have taken place in the recent past – Identity theft on social media happens for multiple reasons and can affect anyone.  There are a number of incidents when there had been thefts in the houses when the entire family has gone for a pleasure trip and shared on social media. The young generation has now started posting the status of visiting the other stations, especially during the summer holidays which gives a clue to the professional unscrupulous persons and thieves,

Making an appeal to the people not to post their status on social media while moving away even for a single day, Grover said, social media hacks are on the rise. Social media sites require your personal information to operate—but sharing your private data puts you at risk of identity theft. Make sure you are doing everything you can to keep your data safe.
