Home for the Blinds celebrates 210th birth anniversary of Father of Braille -Louis Braille

Ferozepur,  January 4, 2019:  Every year, January 4 is celebrated as the birthday of Louis Braille inventor of six-dots raised language punched on a card sheet to be read by visually impaired persons.

210th birth anniversary of Father of Braille, Sir Louis Braille birthday was today celebrated by the inmates of Home for the Blinds.

The history of Louis Braille, who invented the technique which became a mode of communication for millions of visually challenged around the world – has become a part of the syllabus in CBSE in Punjab and Braille language was declared the official language in Paris.

The inmates garlanded the statue of Louise Braille and paid rich tributes on his birthday by reading certain chapters from the Braille books, followed by the musical programme and a tea party.

Speaking on the occasion, Harish Monga said, the invention of Braille has a credit of enlightening and vocationally rehabilitating visually impaired people, making them self-reliant and socially productive members of the community.  He said many research studies have proven that those who are more proficient in Braille are more confident, independent and highly educated and have higher employment opportunities. I feel happy to share 18 inmates 18 inmates of Home for the Blinds, have joined the government job in various departments. Presently, 25 inmates are housed in the institution who are being provided with free lodging, boarding, education and medical facility.

He said, various equipment have been invented to promote Braille literacy but in spite of tremendous developments, legislation and opportunities, still books of higher education are not available in Braille. He thanked the Deputy Commissioner for regular financial assistance from the Red Cross Society.

Kashmiri Lal, product of Home for the Blind who retired as government lecturer who was also present on this occasion said,  Louis Braille – (Jan 4, 1809 – Jan. 6, 1852) – was a French educator and inventor of a system of reading and writing for use by the blind or visually impaired. His system remains virtually unchanged to this day and is known worldwide simply as Braille. The Braille language brought a revolution in the lives of visually impaired person and they started competing in every field.

Present among others on this occasion were Harish Monga, Management member, Satish Machhral, Supervisor, Kamal Malhotra, and inmates of the institution.
