Health Deptt cracks down on sex-determination tests in Ferozepur, two touts booked with recovery of Rs.30,000

Ferozepur, April 14, 2023:  The Ferozepur police have booked two touts involved in sex determination test being done from a house on Ferozepur-Moga road by installing the ultrasound machine, under Sections 4/18/25/6-B for violating The Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act 1994,  at police station Kulgarhi with recovery of Rs.30,000 cash.   The agents of the alleged accused doctor used to bring the customers for sex-determination test by charging heavy amount.

Dr.Chander Shekhar, District Family Welfare Officer, Dr.Dhira Gupta DMC Faridkot, Om Parkash Arora, District Coordinator Faridkot and Smt.Sonia Rani, Social Worker Faridkot along with Ferozepur Civil Surgeon Dr.Rajinder Pal, Dr.Meenakshi Abrol District Family Welfare officer Smt.Manjinder Kaur Loear Sakhi One Stop Centre and Miss Seema Rani, Disrict PNDT Coordinator raided Krishan-4 Colony near Aalewala with the help of the police.  Sonia Rani, decoy customer was also present on this occasion.

Divulging with the details, Dr.Rajinder Pal, Civil Surgeon-cum-District Appropriate Authority on whose complaint the case has been registered – said that working on the tip-off, a trap was planned  and a team of doctors and police officials nabbed two persons – Sukhdev Singh son Ajaib Singh of Udekaran under Muktsar police station and Manjit Kaur wife of Major Singh of Sukhna Ablu of Mukstar, by raiding, as per the name on the Aadhar Card, were helping in getting the sex-determination tests, with recovery of Rs.30,000 cash from their possession in the denomination of Rs.2000 after matching with the list already available, by the SHO Kulgarhi.

He further disclosed that the health department had sent two decoy patients to Sukhdev Singh and Manjit Kaur, who took them to the house where the sex determination test was to be conducted. But the same was found locked.

As per the information, neither the locked house where the sex-tests were being conducted was break open or sealed nor has the name of the doctor who conducts the tests been disclosed. The doctor, perhaps on coming to know of the raid fled away from the house by locking it.

The civil surgeon said they have informed the local police about the raid following which a formal case against two middle persons has been registered who assist in the sex determination tests under the relevant sections of the law.

Meanwhile the further investigations are on with Gurpreet Singh who has been appointed as IO in this case with special focus on to arrest the doctor who was conducting the tests.

The Civil Surgeon, saying that pre-sex determination is a grave offense which has potential to damage the very fabric of gender equality and dignity.  appealed the public to support the government in nabbing such anti-social elements and in order to strike a fair balance in sex ration.  He also asked all institutions must display a notice indicating that sex determination or selection is prohibited under the law.
