Ferozepur Police booked Arnab Ranjan Goswami for promoting enmity

Ferozepur, April 24, 2020:  The Ferozepur police have booked one Arnab Ranjan Goswami on the complaint of Wilson son of Sapson, resident of MES Colony Cantt in a sedition case, for promoting enmity and defamation.

The complainant has alleged that  over a video which has surfaced on social media – WhatsApp – showing Republican television as alleged accused inciting Hindu society about Christianity in an attempt to escalate animosity among the resident of Indians.

Arnab and his style of journalism have been subject to massive criticism. Earlier also, Arnab Goswami had been in controversies in cases like Tharoor defamation case, remarks over Keralities, News Broadcasting Standards Authority – NBSA – censures.

As per the information, the cases booked under sedition over the years are long – Kanahaya Kumar, Arundhati Roy etc. – but it seldom seen to be followed by trial courts. The Kedar Nath judgment upholds the restrictions imposed by Section 124A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code on the fundamental right to free speech and expression.   It looked to be a strong medicine for mere words.

Another opinion is that the right of freedom of opinion and the right of freedom of conscience by themselves include the extremely important   right to disagree.  If a person does not ask questions and does not raise issues questioning age old systems, no new systems would develop and the horizons of the mind   will   not expand.

However, a case under Section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race place of irth residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 124-A of IPC (Sedition – attempts to bring into hatred or contempt) has been booked with appoint of Balbir Singh as IO and further investigations are on.  However, no arrest has so far been made in this case.
