Despite lockdown, smuggling continues from Pak, BSF recovers heroin, arms and ammunition in Punjab
Ferozepur, May 10, 2020: Despite enforcing of countrywide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic by both India and Pakistan, smuggling of heroin from the neighbouring country through the Punjab border, has been going on unabated. Punjab shares a 553-km border, with a barbed fence, with Pakistan.
With the seizure of 5 kg heroin along the border, the total recovery so far during the year, as on date is 137.194 kg including the today’s recovery.
On 09 May 2020 alert Border Security Force troops seized 05 Plastic bottles(Cold drink type 2 Ltrs – 02 , 01 Ltrs – 01 and Sipper Type – 02 Nos) filled with contraband ( approx- 5 kg) suspected to be heroin along with 01 Pistol (9mm ), 01 Magazine and 04 Rounds in the area of responsibility of 14 Bn BSF, Ferozepur Sector.
Due to strictness of police on drug smuggling and the ongoing curfew, the supply chain of drugs has been broken in the state. Due to this, Pakistani smugglers may have been attempting to push in more drugs.
At the same time, the farmer who have their fields across the fence are allowed to visit during the harvesting season and it becomes easy for Indian side smugglers to collect the consignments adopting various concealing and new methods, like today’s in plastic bottles taking the advantage of agriculture related works.
BSF sources said, a list of suspected people including some farmers is already on record and cat-eye vigil is being kept in the border villages and no one will be allowed to peddle the drugs.
Vigilant troops of Border Security Force once again thwarted the attempt of Anti-National Elements to push the consignment of contraband items into India. During the year 2020, BSF has effected under mentioned seizures on Punjab Border – Heroin 137.194 kg, Indian border crosser apprehended 44, Pak intruder 4, Weapon different types 17, Magazine different types 26, Ammunition various calbres 267 rounds, Pak Mobile phone 2, Pak SIM card 2, including today’ seizure.
