DC Ferozepur appeals potential donors to come forward to donate blood

Ferozepur, April 22, 2020: In the wake of coronavirus threat, the district administration is encouraged social distance but they also worry as it is leading to a shortage of donated blood.

Deputy Commissioner, Kulwant Singh who is also the President of District Red Cross Society, made an appeal to the youths to come forward to donate blood in the Blood Bank at Civil Hospital as presently only a few units of blood are available in the  Blood Bank.

He said, when the blood cannot be manufactured in any factory, the youths should feel proud while donating blood and must put their contribution by donating blood in this hour of need.

Dr.Dishwan, BTO informed that as many as 145 units of blood were deposited in Blood Bank during the last year which was used for the needy patients.  This is perhaps for the first time that few people had come forward to donate blood due to curfew.  He said we take all precautionary measures before taking blood from the potential donors besides giving personal hygiene advice.

To ensure an adequate blood supply we need people to come out and donate blood. In the wake of the spread of coronavirus worldwide for the last three and a half month and since one month in India and with the imposition of curfew-lockdown, the youths have not come forward to donate blood in the Blood Bank, said Ashok Behal, Secretary, District Red Cross Society Ferozepur.

He said presently about one dozen social organizations are always ready to donate blood in case of any emergency and most of the donors prefer to donate directly to the needy patient.  Type O-ve blood is nearly always in short supply because it can be used in transfusions for any blood type.  But right now there is a shortage of all blood types.

Only there are ten units of blood in the blood bank and an appeal has was made by the Blood Transfusion Officer – BTO through the Red Cross so that it could be available for the needy patients in an emergency, he said.

Now a day, the members of Manwata Sewa Society and Life Saver Society are donating the maximum units of blood, he added.

Feeling proud of potential blood donors of Ferozepur. Ashok Behal once again made an appeal to the youths to come forward voluntarily to donate blood in the blood bank so that cancer, accident, thalassemia, pregnant women and patients to be operated could be provided the blood on a need basis.
