Ferozepur, December 29, 2023: The seizure of a bulk of mobiles from inside Central Jail Ferozepur throughout the year, has baffled the jail officials. The officials, however, claim to keep a strict vigil on every ward of the jail to ward off any untoward incident. But despite this, some inmates break jail rules and continue their criminal activities from the premises.

The recent recovery during the two search operations is 8 mobiles, 2 batteries, and one charger from the inmates lying unclaimed in the barracks and more than 500 mobiles reported to have been seized, during the current year from the jail during search operation from the prisoners, lying unclaimed or from the packets thrown over the high wall of the jail. But it has no answer about how these cell phones landed inside the jail.

The jail is considered as a safe place for the criminals who have threats from their counterparts.  At the same time, the mobile is the most wanted item by the prisoners to remain in contact with their family members and for its illegal use to threaten people while in jail to extort money.

During the first search operation carried out by Nirmaljit Singh Assistant Superintendent, 5 mobiles were recovered from the prisoners – Surjit Singh alias Toni Sagar alias Ghula and Lakhwinder Kumar and in the second search operation by Rishavpal Goyal, Assistant Superintendent, two mobiles lying unclaimed and 3 mobiles, two batteries and one charger was recovered from langar barrack number 2.

In both cases, the case has been registered against the prisoners and unknown persons under the Prisons Act and further investigations are on with Gurmail Singh IO in these cases.

Despite high boundary walls and three-layer security, it remains a mystery as to how the mobiles and other banned items are reaching inside the campus.  There are also residential houses on one side of the jail premises while one side is open.  Notorious criminals take advantage of dense population and open space. Their associates throw mobile phones over the campus boundary wall. If the height of the wall is increased further, this malpractice can be checked easily.  Besides, taking stringent measures at the entry points and banning the relatives’ visitation on mobile recovery from the particular prisoner can reduce this menace.
