Ferozepur, December 9, 2023: The recovery of mobile telephones and high-tech devices like pen-drive –information storage gadgets and other banned items from inside Ferozepur Jail has once again put focus back on lax security arrangements in and outside the jail premises.
The recovery of 6 mobiles in three raids by Assistant Superintendents – Sukhjinder Singh, Rishavpal Singh and Nirmaljit Singh, during the recent checking by the jail staff, on the 4th consecutive day has become a mystery about its entry into the jail. On a tip-off, one mobile was recovered from barrack number 2 from prisoner Akash, 4 mobiles were recovered from two under trial prisoners Michel Bhandari and Karan lying unclaimed and in the third checking, one mobile lying unclaimed.
In all the cases, the case has been registered against the prisoners already in the jail and unknown persons and further investigations are on with the IO Gurmail Singh. But hardly there is any outcome reported by the authorities as taking the prisoner on remand for in-depth investigation from the jail is risky from the security point of view and the matter ends with the registration of cases. More strict measures need to be taken to curb the menace of the use of mobiles and entry of other banned items.
This is not the first time that such devices have been recovered inside Ferozepur jail premises, in the past, the recovery of mobiles and other accessories and banned items during the year 2023 has gone up to 449 due to lax security at the entry points and throwing of packets from outside over the 30 ft high walls with barbed wiring.
The mobiles were reportedly being used by the jail inmates, to easily access to stay in touch with their nears and dears outside and carry out their activities both legal and illegal, by passing on the directions to their counterparts. Thus the purpose of keeping the criminals away from the outer world as punishment is lost.
The prisons are known for being safe havens from the criminals and their handlers and this menace has now spread to almost all the jails. Role of some jail officials in facilitating the entry of mobiles and other items for money can’t be ruled out,” sources said.
