Farmers demand higher compensation for damaged crop

Ferozepur, March 30, 2023:  Farmers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee have demanded higher compensation for the damage of standing crops due to unseasonable heavy rain.  Untimely rain accompanied by hail and high-velocity winds damaged wheat and other crops in several parts of Punjab.

Added here, the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had visited certain districts of the state where crops were damaged by hail storms and rains and assured the farmers that they would be duly compensated for the loss. If a farmer suffers more than 75 percent crop loss the state government will provide a compensation of Rs 15,000 per acre. If the loss is between 33 and 75 per cent, the compensation would be Rs 6,750 per acre.

CM has also directed the Financial Commission (Revenue) to issue detailed instructions to the DCs concerned to immediately carry out a crop loss assessment to ascertain the damage.

In a meeting held at Arif Ke Dhan Dhan Bhagat Dhanna Ji Gurudawara, under the chairmanship of Zone President, Harful Singh Dolewala, District Secretary Gurmail Singh and Zone Secretary Bhupinder Singh said, the crops have damaged on a large scale and the farmers already in heavy debts are committing suicide.  The announcement of Rs.15,000 per acre compensation should be enhanced to atleast Rs.50,000 per acre.
