Ferozepur, March 25, 2024:  Ferozepur police have recovered 32,000 litres ‘lahan’ (raw material used to prepare illicit liquor) from several villages on the banks of Sutlej.

 

During the last three days, there had also been recovery in a war like operation against illicit liquor/lahan of 36 bottles of whisky, 3275 bottles of whisky in Guruharsahai area, 60 ltrs lahan and 150 ltrs lahan in Zira, 250 ltrs lahan and 90 ltrs in Makhu.

 

The illicit liquor trade goes unabated in the border villages being cheaper and more affordable as compared to regular whisky for the poor, who continue to consume without bothering for its adverse effect on health which sometimes claim lives also. Such illegal liquor trade in the border villages is also a direct loss to the exchequer. The increasing sale of illicit liquor, especially near the festivals and elections, also affects the business of licensed liquor vends in the region, which hit the revenue of liquor contractors.

 

 

On a tip-off by Sadar Police Station by SHO Jaswant Singh about brew of illicit liquor across the border villages, a CASO operation was carried out, under directions of Soumya Mishra, SSP, under the supervision of DSP City Sukhwinder Singh, adopting the zero-tolerance policy on illegal extracting of illicit liquor, by the police along with excise officials, in the villages on the banks of Sutlej on Monday morning.  Around 32,000 ltrs ‘lahan’ the and recovered dumped in the ground in the plastic bags, which was destroyed on the spot to avoid misuse.

 

DSP said, working swiftly on the tip-off, the operation was carried out in the villages across the Sutlej River near the international Pakistan border which has restricted access. None of the criminals involved in this trade were available at the recovery points.  However, our teams are working to unearth more such activities and to nab the accused and action will be taken as per the law.
