Ferozepur, July 23, 2021:  In a joint raid conducted by excise and police officials, under the supervision of  Gurbaksh Singh, Excise Inspector, Circle Zira, in the enclaves of river Satluj in the surrounds of villages, Ali Ke, Habib Ke, Nehanganwala Chughe, Chandiwala, Raje Ki Gatti, Chaka Da Bedha and near Puggar Di Motor.

The illicit liquor business, using ‘lahan’ (raw material for making liquor), has been going on in border areas for a long time. To check the illegal manufacture and sale of illicit liquor, the raids are conduced as a part of operations to control it, said excise official.

It is pertinent to mention that a majority of the population settled along the banks of Sutlej River belongs to minority communities and most male members of the village are daily-wagers.  These people have not been getting any lucrative employment offers and hence taking up illicit liquor trade to make both ends meet.

During the raid approximately 64,000 litres of lahan and 1,250 bottles of illicit liquor recovered and destroyed on the spot being unclaimed and to avoid its misuse. However, 32 tarpaulins, 4 rubber tubes, have been taken into custody, said excise official.
