Un-strengthened advance protection bundh poses flood threat to 50 villages in Makhu area

Non release of adequate funds halts work on Dhussi Bundh

 DC visits Dhusi Bandh

Ferozepur, July 29, 2015: Various teams from drainage, police, homeguards, NDRF and revenue departments headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Er.DPS Kharbanda visited the advane protection bundh along bundh and flood-prone villages in Zira Tehsil.

Earmarking of funds to the tune of Rs.16 crore now and its non-release, clearly speaks poor planning at various levels.

The teams visited Dhusi Bundhi pillar 15160 of Satluj, Kassuwala Maur, Giddarpindi Rail-cum-Road Bridge, Rukneala, Basti Ram Lal, Muthianwali, Khanna Kalan besides other susceptible areas.

Also visited were the damaged bridges of Kimewali and Jogewala.

According to Deputy Commissioner, Er.DPS Kharbanda, Rs.7.5 crore has already been  spent for strengthening of embankments besides Rs.16 crore for construction of bridges.

The officials has also been directed to expedite the pending work at the earliest.  The railway has also been directed to plug the 25 ft split between Ferozepur and Jalandhar near Gidarpindi-Lohian rail bridge.

As per the sources, nearly 50 villages face the threat of floods in the absence of repairs and construction of bridges as the government has not released the required funds for the strengthening of the advance protection bundh in the Makhu area of the district.

Deputy Commissioner, however, informed that a control room has been set up at the district headquarter and tehsil level to register any complaint and get information with regard to the flood situation.

Another source says, Rs.1.05 crore were required for the reinforcement, widening and further strengthening of the Dhussi Bundh near Khanna Klan village on the Monga-Ferozepur border and the government to act quickly on this important issue despite knocking several times.
