Railway issues fresh train operation plan on talks between Punjab Farmers-Centre remain inconclusive over 3 Farm Laws
Ferozepur, October 19, 2020: Since the talks between Punjab farmers and Centre remain inconclusive over three Farm Laws and due to on-going agitation of the farmers in the State, the railway has to plan the operation of trains on day today basis.
The farmers are no longer on tracks or railway platforms but protesting on railway parking and other lands. While the 30-farm unions are insisting on operation of goods trains first and proposal to resume passenger trains will be considered later on. The railway had refused to revoke the suspension of trains.
In the meantime, all district committees will be meeting on November 21, to chalk out their plan for protest at Delhi on November 26 and 27. However, the farmers unions have criticized the Centre for disallowing them the rally venue in Delhi for an agitation.
Due to non-operation of trains, the losses to the industry in the state has been estimated at Rs.22,000 crore due to piling up of goods ready for dispatch. Even the Urea rakes at port cities are stuck up when the Punjab is in immediately need for the next wheat crop. Also 35 lakh tonnes of foodgrain procured earlier and meant to be shifted to other states is also held up in Punjab.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Punjab has also expressed his concern over the decision of the farmer unions. He stated that farm unions should realize that things cannot continue like this. If rail transportation continues to remain suspended any longer the state will plunge into a crisis.
The Northern Railway, keeping in view the ongoing farmers’ agitation in Punjab, has issued fresh trains operation plan, for cancelled, short terminated, short originated, diverted the trains.
In all, the railway has cancelled 30 mail/express trains, short-terminated 11 trains and diverted one pair of train.
