Punjab Government honours prisoners of Emergency & Punjabi Suba Movement
Ferozepur, March 21, 2016: Today, six prisoners/family members Punjabi Suba Movement (1955 to 1965) and of Emergency (26 June 1965 to 21 March 1977) were honoured by Er.DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur as per the decision of the Punjab Government when Sundeep Singh Garha, SDM and Jasleen Kaur Sandhu, Asstt.Commissioner were also present.
In all, 8 applications were received, out of which 7 were found in order. Six prisoners/family members of Punjabi Suba Movement and Emergency were honoured today, said Er.Kharbanda. While one of the application was rejected; another was still under consideration pending verification.
It may be added here, the Emergency of 1975 is a black chapter in the history of the Indian democracy. People suffered and many had to pay the price for standing up against the dictatorship of the then government. The Punjab government has now decided to felicitate all those imprisoned during the period, who waged an unnoticed war for safeguarding democracy and the fundamental rights of the citizens.
He further said, the struggling warriors or the family members of those who have left for heavenly abode will be extended the facility of free bus service and Rs.1000 per month as financial assistances besides honouring them at the state level function.
The Deputy Commissioner instructed to all the heads of the department in the district to provide the struggling warriors the government services and facilities on time so they may not face any inconvenience. He also directed to extend them the formal invitations on Independence and Republic Days.
