Ferozepur, June 6, 2024: Out of the total 29 candidates in the fray in Ferozepur during the Lok Sabha Polls in Ferozepur Constituency, 25 have to lose security deposits. It was a four-cornered contest in Ferozepur between the four major political parties AAP, BJP, Congress and SAD.
During the last elections, 5 candidates in 1977, 10 in 1980, 3 in 195, 17, 9in 1989, 6 in 1992, 19 in 1996, 5 in 1998, 14 in 1999, 14 in 2004, 25 in 2009, 13 in 2014, 20 in 2019 and 25 candidates in 2024 had failed to meet the required vote threshold and consequently lost their security deposits.
As per Election Commission rules, candidates must secure at least one-sixth of the total votes polled in a constituency to retrieve their security deposit, which amounts to Rs 25,000 for general candidates and Rs 12,500 for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe nominees. The security deposit amount, submitted to the EC at the time of filing of nominations, is forfeited if a candidate fails to secure one-sixth or 16.67 per cent of total valid votes polled in that constituency.
In the results of LS Polls for Ferozepur declared on June 4, out of total 16,70,008 votes, 11,25,115 were polled – Sher Singh Ghubaya (Congress) secured 2,66,626 votes (23.7%), Rana Sodhi (BJP) 2,55.097 (22.67%), Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar (AAP) 2,63,384 (23.41% and Vardev Singh Mann (SAD) 2,53,645 votes (22.54%). The total voting was 63 per cent in Ferozepur Lok Sabha constituency and 92.91 per cent votes were polled to these four candidates. Even, 6100 NOTA votes were also polled.
The Ferozepur has so far been captured by SAD 11 times followed by Congress and BSP.
The other candidates of small political parties including 17 Independent candidates got between 642 by Chamkor Singh and 15941 maximum by Gurcharan Singh Bhullar of SAD(A).
In most of the elections, the contest is between the major political – national or regional parties, which include certain faces who contest as an Independent candidate being ignored by their parent party or some candidates being fielded to cut the vote of the opposition party. Since 1970, till the last elections, 115 candidates have contested the Independent candidates and only one candidate – Dhyan Singh Mand had defeated Congress candidate Jagbir Singh by 32,850 votes in 1989.
While AAP despite 7 MLAs in the Ferozepur constituency could not retain its candidate, BJP lost perhaps due to the verdict by the farmer’s note to vote for BJP but to any other party, Vardev Singh Mann SAD candidate though gave a tough fight but could not retain its old status and Congress candidate Sher Singh Ghubaya who remained two time MP in 2009 and 2014 but lost as Congress candidate from Sukhbir Singh Badal SAD, got the win-win situation because of his influence and also due INDIA block wave or the voters have no choice.
