Of 25845, 16496 weapons deposited so far ahead of Lok Sabha elections
Ferozepur, April 6, 2024: In the wake of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the district administration authorities are speeding up the deposition of licensed arms with the nearest police stations or gun houses, to conduct the election process peacefully after the announcement of the Model Code of Conduct on March 16. In Ferozepur, against 25,845 licensed weapons in the district, 16496 have been deposited so far.
Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Punjab on June 1, several district election officers (DEOs) in the state have issued orders directing the public to surrender their licensed weapons or face fines or action. The last date to deposit the licenced arms was given as April 4 but so far only 64 per cent of weapons have been deposited and the rest are yet to deposit or seek exemption.
The district administration is likely to take action under Section 188 CRPC for the registration of a case and to cancel the licence.
The license holders can deposit their weapons in 14 police stations and 17 gun houses in the district against proper deposit receipt. The private gun house owners will charge Rs,200 per month as storage charges.
So far, 1010 out of 1533 have been deposited under Arif Ke police station, in Ferozepur Cantt 533 of 733, in Ferozepur City 1271 of 2037, in PS Sadar Ferozepur 1443 of 2013, in Ghall Khurd 1080 of 1810, in Kulgarhi 1262 of 2159, in Mamdot 1266 of 2066, in Talwandi Bhai 640 of 832, in Zira 618 of 1075, in Makhu 1146 of 1734, in Mallanwala 1783 of 2831, in Zira 2044 of 2752, in Guruharsahai 1340 of 2395 and Lakho Ke Behram 1083 of 1875. In all, 16,496 have been deposited out of 25,845, which comes to 63.82 per cent.
DEO-cum-DC Rajesh Dhiman said, more than 60 per cent of weapons have been deposited and the rest are also deposited.
