Mobiles recovery from jail puts focus back on lax security arrangements
Ferozepur, January 30, 2023: Recovery of regular mobiles and other banned items from the jail inmates and lying unclaimed is a matter of serious concern which puts focus back on lax security arrangements in prison.
During the search operation, 4 mobiles were recovered from to the jail – one from Vijay Kumar, under trial prisoner in barrack number 2 and one from the bathroom of the same barrack, as unclaimed. Two mobiles and 8 packs of cigarettes were found in the wrapped packet with tape thrown from over the high walls of the jail.
Only three days back, during the two search operations carried out on January 25 and 26, five mobiles have been recovered from inside the jail from the under trial prisoners and lying as unclaimed.
There had been a number of incidents of recovery of mobiles and other banned items from inside the jail from the possession of inmates or lying thrown outside the barracks. During the last year, as many as 437 mobiles were recovered from inside the jail. High rising buildings near Ferozepur prison also pose a security threat and the open space behind the jail is free to throw packets containing various banned items.
The police after taking the prisoners on remand are investigating the matter with special focus on the motive of usage of mobiles from inside the jail and source of smuggling inside the jail, said SSP at the time of returning the stolen or missing mobiles. But at the same time, the regular recovery of mobile from the jail has exposed the security arrangements at the entry points.
A case under Section 52-A of Prisons Act has been registered with appointment of Ayub Masih, as IO and further investigations are on.
