Meet Baby, Silony and Surbhi, writing exams for the visually impaired inmates of Blind Home

Ferozepur December 18, 2018:  Visually-impaired people are humans too and sometimes people forget that they have a disability in particular part of their body, not in heart.  Keeping this principle in mind, three students of local RSD College of BA First Year has opted to offer their services as a writer in the exams.

Today, when  I visited the Home for the Blind, Rahul, Chandan Lal and Yakub Ali after having their food were waiting for their writers to take them to the college for the exam.  These three inmates of Home for the Blind are appearing in BA Second Year exams.  Baby, Silony and Surbhi are college mates and as per instructions, the visually impaired person can take one writer of the lower class with him.  Today they were appearing in Music theory paper.

Added here, Home for the Blind established in 1954 has produced many educated visually impaired students who are either now retired or well settled in various positions.  Present, the Home for the Blind is housing 22 visually impaired persons with free lodging and boarding, education etc. and out of which, 6 are college going students.  In the recent past, 18 visually impaired persons have joined the government job at different places in various departments of Punjab government – Education, DC office, Irrigation, PWD and Local Bodies.

Talking to the writers, who have volunteered their services shared that it is our proud privilege to serve the blinds community so that they may not feel ignored as a part of the society.   We feel happy to support them which can build their confidence to help them to grow to stand on their own feet.

Besides, as a writer, we are improving our handwriting in addition to knowledge and what not.

They said, normally people don’t come forward to help the blinds but when one goes in depth, he understands their pain as they are from very poor families and don’t have enough facilities and sources at home and even they lack mentors.

While the visually impaired thanked their college mates for helping them in exams as the writer, the writers said instead of crying out for what society has not done for us, we need to think what we could do for the society.

Satish Machhral, Supervisor, Home for the Blind thanked the writer students for helping the inmates of our institution.
