Jail staff steps up search, family members try new tricks to smuggle in drugs

Ferozepur July 29, 2018:  With the recovery of number of drugs, mobiles and SIM cards from the barracks of the jail, the jail staff during its intensified search operation recovered drugs and mobile SIM cards from three different members of the family who had come to meet the prisoners in jail and tried new tricks to smuggle in drugs, mobile and other materials.

No doubt prisoners are permitted to have social visits from friends and family members but some will still try to smuggle small wraps of drugs or even tiny mobile phones to their loved ones.

On the complaint of Superintendent Jail, Ferozepur, six persons have been booked under the relevant Sections of NDPS and Prisons Acts, identified as – Gurwinder Singh of Rukanshah Wala, Ram Singh of Ram Singh Bhaini, Gurdev Singh of Mare Kalan – all visitors and prisoners Gajjan Singh and Jaswinder  of Hardasa.

Gurvindeer Singh had come to meet prisoner Jaspal Singh who handed over a packet of rusk and on checking, 200 habit forming drug tablets and 1 small packets of Chaini Kahini were recovered.

Ram Singh had come to meet prisoner Raj Singh who handed over to him ‘zarda’ packets.

Gurdev Singh had come to meet prisoner Resham Singh and on searching the material handed over to him one SIM of BSNL was found.

Similarly Jaswinder Kaur had come to meet prisoner Gajjan Singh and during the search, material suspected to be heroin or smack was found from her private parts of the body.

On anonymity, one of the jail officials said, the most reliable route into prisons has always been to use the services of the corrupt member of the prison staff. At the same time, the security checks can be particularly lax due to serious staff shortage.  So paying a prison official or civilian staff member to transport consignments of drugs or mobile phones into jails cannot be ruled out and is probably the most profitable way of breaching prison security.
