Ferozepur, August 15, 2015: Independence Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and fervor at various places in the district.
Punjab Cabinet Minister, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, hoisted the national flag at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Stadium. Earlier, Sekhon paid tributes to the martyrs at Hussainiwala Memorial. He was accompanied by Kamal Sharma, Punjab BJP President, Joginder Singh Jindu, MLA.
However, the Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki and local former MLA and CPS Sukhpal Singh Nannu were not seen at the celebrations.
While the nation celebrated the 68th Independence Day, the residents of border towns of this historic town do not have much to cheer about and out of their houses due to heavy inflow of water in Sutlej River damaging their houses and standing crop of about 1500-1600 acres.
The residents of villages situated along the Indo-Pak border – Chandi Wala, Hazara Singh Wala, Tendi Wala – are flooded with water in low lying areas. One temporary bridge has also washed away due to strong current of the water. Every year they face flood-like situation and stereotype replies are passed on to the villagers to look after their problems and providing the adequate compensation.
After independence and subsequent partition, the erstwhile flourishing town of Ferozepur became a border with usual handicaps of a sensitive border area. The residents are are still deprived of basic amenities such as potable water, proper sewerage system and proper infrastructure. There had been no major industry in the area and most of the industrialists have shifted their base or struggling for survival.
Various projects announced earlier – opening PGI Satellite Centre, State of Eye Centre, Government College, AstroTurf are still to see the light of day.

After hoisting the national flag, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, paying tributes to those who sacrificed their lives in various movements in Punjab, said, because of sacrifices of martyrs, we are enjoying the freedom. He said, the maximum sacrifices have been given by the Punjabis in the struggle of freedom movement of India

Sekhon said, to keep alive the sacrifices, the Punjab Government is erecting Jang-e-Azadi Memorial at a cost of Rs.300 crore at Kartarpur.
He invited all the Punjabis to come forward for the unity and harmony of the country like previously.
On this occasion, a cultural programme was also presented by the students of various schools.
Janmeja Singh Sekhon also honoured various persons who have excelled in various fields like education, sports, social services, freedom fighters, members of kargil war families.
