In Clean-up operation against illicit liquor production, 37,500 ltrs ‘lahan’, 300 illicit liquor bottles seized
Ferozepur, July 30, 2021: To check the illegal manufacture and sale of illicit liquor in its crackdown against liquor mafia, the raids are conducted as a part of operations to control it and in a joint raid conducted by excise and police officials, under the supervision of Gurbaksh Singh, Excise Inspector, Circle Zira, in the enclaves of river Satluj in the surrounds of villages, Kilche Kamianwale & Chughe, approximately 37,500 ltrs of lahan and 300 bottles of illicit liquor recovered and destroyed on the spot being unclaimed and to avoid its misuse. CM had already directed strong action against “illicit distillation of liquor, bootlegging and smuggling of liquor from bordering states”.
However, 19 tarpaulins, one rubber tube, 3 iron drums, 8 aluminum utensils and 2 working stills, have been taken into custody, said excise official.
Added here, It is pertinent to mention that the illicit liquor business, using ‘lahan’ (raw material for making liquor), has been going on in border areas for a long time. a majority of the population settled along the banks of Sutlej River belongs to minority communities and most male members of the village are daily-wagers. These people have not been getting any lucrative employment offers and hence taking up illicit liquor trade to make both ends meet.
Earlier, 64,000 ltrs and 1,250 bottles on July 23, 3,500 ltrs and 450 bottles on July 26, 72000 ltrs and 6,750 bottles on July 30 was also recovered by the excise officials. With massive recoveries every day, the number of cases under the Excise Act have been increasing manifold.
