Illegal sand mining poses threat to river, bridges, 4 booked for illegal mining in Ferozepur

Ferozepur, July 17, 2023: Rampant illegal being taken up in large scale, that too in broad daylight on rivers poses grave threat to bridges constructed across culverts and prime roads, cultivable lands in the rain fed areas and irrigation wells. The illegal activities are not reported by the people even without realising that such activities will ultimately affect their livelihood.

The police booked four persons for illegal sand mining in Mallanwala area. SHO Gurjant Singh said an arrest was made after conducting a raid at a mining site at Sudhar villge.

Illegal mining that continues unabated poses a threat to highway bridges and there are incidents when bridges were washed away following heavy rain. According to the state government’s policy, mining cannot be carried out within 100 metres of a bridge.

Three of the accused, identified as Bhupinder Singh of Sudharan, Harpreet Singh alias Happy, Gurpreet Singh alias Gora of Maluwaliea Wala and managed to flee the spot while Iqbal Singh alias Kawaala of Valtoha was arrested. All have been booked under 379 IPC and 21(3) of Mining and Mineral Act along with one identified person, said SHO. However, one JCP without registration number, three tractors with trolley and one motorcycle without number was recovered from the site. Meanwhile, the investigations are on with Gurdeep Singh, IO.
