Five mobiles seized during search operation at Central Jail, alert staff recovers 339 mobiles recovery during 2023

Ferozepur, October 13, 2023:  Recovery of mobiles and other banned items from inside the Central Jail is a continued process and in the recent two search operations, five mobiles were recovered – three from under trial prisoners and two as unclaimed.  However, the alert jail staff have so far recovered  339 mobiles during the current year.

As per the information, during 46 mobiles were recovered during January 2023, 61 in February, 55 in March, 45 in April, 21 in May, 28 in June, 11 in July, 29 in August, 28 in September and 15 mobiles till October 12 and so far 339 mobiles have been recovered from inside the jail besides other banned items like chargers, ‘bidis’, cigarettes, ‘zarda’ etc.

Rishavpal Goyal, Assistant Superintendent, in the recent incident, three mobiles were found from three under trial prisoners and two mobiles as unclaimed.  Apart from this, ‘bidis’ and ‘zarda’ sachets were also recovered from one under trial prisoner.  On his complaint, a case has been registered under Prisons Act against undertrial prisoner Jaspreet Singh of Fazilka for recovery of one mobile with battery and SIM card, during the search . One mobile was recovered from under trial prisoners Surinder Singhali of Bathinda and Arshdeep Singh of Barnala.  At the same time, two mobiles were found unclaimed.

In another complaint, the under trial prisoner Desa Singh was sent with the guard for appearance in the court at Zira and when he came back, 10 ‘bidis’ and 10 gm tobacco was found from his possession on checking at ‘deori’.

The congested residential area around the jail is said to be one of the reasons as unscrupulous and bad elements manage to throw the mobiles in packets over the high walls of the jail while there is shortage of staff in jail to keep a cat eye all the time on the jail inmates. The jail being close to the commercial and residential area, the jammer for mobiles is not possible to be installed.  In fact, security is being managed mostly by Home Guard jawans and PESCO company staff whereas there is a need to post trained staff on security duty so that the purpose of keeping the prisoners away from the out world as punishment is not lost.

All the four under trial prisoners and unidentified person has been booked under the relevant sections of the Prisons Act and further investigations as usual in other such cases are on.
