Ferozepur, January 31, 20202: The traders have started stocking banned Chinese thread ahead of kite-flying season.  The Ferozepur Police on a tip-off, have swooped down on Chinese thread sellers and recovered as many as 180 Chinese thread rolls (gattu).

The people, who have sustained injuries in the past due to the Chinese string, have sought a complete curb on the sale of such products as, despite its ban, it is easily available in the market.

Since the Chinese thread is harmful made up of metallic substances, if it comes in contact with overhead wires, it can cause a blackout in the area.  It is also a good conductor of electricity so it can lead to electrocution of the user if entangled with electric wires.

The district administration had already issued orders banning the China-made thread, which is dangerous for both humans and animals. The police force is out on a drive, checking different parts of the city looking for illegal sellers.

A special campaign was being carried out by the police to check the incidents of injuries due to Chinese thread and the accused could also be booked under Sections 39 and 51 of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Section 15 of Environment Protection Act 1986.

Meanwhile, awareness is also being spread about the harmful effects of China-made thread through the local NGOs.  Four years ago, the National Green Tribunal – NGT – had banned the use of any synthetic thread coated with glass or other abrasives for flying kites.

Giving this information, Baldev Singh, IO said, the police party was patrolling near Udham Singh Chowk when a tip-off was received that Parmjit Singh and auto driver Som Nath – who are doing the business of selling Chinese thread is waiting for the customers at Arya Samaj Chowk.  He further said, when a raid was conducted at the designated place, 180 Chinese thread rolls were recovered.  Both were booked under Section 188 of IPC (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).  The accused were, however, released on surety being a non-bailable offense.
