Ferozepur secures Fastest Moving City award in North Zone under Swachh Survekshan 2017
Ferozepur, May 5, 2017: The Muncipal Council of Ferozepur – a city on the banks of the river Sutlej in Ferozepur district in the state of Punjab with a population of 1,10,313 – 2011 Census – with its consistent efforts in the Swachh Survekshan 2017, wherein the city ranked 222nd among other cities, in contrast to the 362nd relative ranking in 2014, was judged as Fastest Moving City in the North Zone under the category of less than 2 lakh population.
The Union Minister for Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu announced the Swachh Survekshan Awards in New Delhi on Thursday morning.
The Swachh Survekshan has become a significant measure of India’s sanitation status and enables cities to not only measure themselves against other comparable cities but also helps in drawing up a roadmap to scale up their efforts towards ‘swachhta’. It is the second survey undertaken under the SBM-Urban.
In fact, the objective of the Swachh Survekshan survey was to encourage citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making our towns and cities better places to live in besides foster a spirit of healthy competition to improve their service delivery to citizens and to create cleaner urban spaces.
The survey of 500 cities was conducted in the country during January and February by Quality Council of India, Government of India and award was presented to Ferozepur Municipal Council after the announcement of result on May 4 at National Media Centre New Delhi. In the Zonal Ranking of country, Ferozepur got 22nd place and 5th among Clean City in Punjab.
Speaking to the media persons, Ashwani Grover, President, Municipal Council in the presence of MCs and staff said, “The award for Ferozepur is due to the collective efforts of all especially the safai karamcharis who had and are working day and night to keep the city neat and clean under Swachh Bharat Mission launched by the Prime Minister Narendera Modi”.
He said, the Council will honour the staff in a simple and impressive ceremony for bagging the award for Ferozepur. He thanked the residents of Ferozepur and hope to continue to get cooperation to maintain this status in future also.
On this occasion, Sukhpal Singh, Sanitary Inspector said, it’s a team work which has brought laurels for Ferozepur at the national level. He appealed to the people of the city to maintain cleanliness around them to create pollution free environment.
He said, Ferozepur Municipal Council assured maximum public participation by running special driver for distributing “Door to Door” pamphlets and pasting Flex Board at back side of Govt. Roadways buses and also organized awareness programmes under Swachh Bharat Mission in several schools.
