Ferozepur, December, 23, 2016 : Polytechnic Wing of Shaheed Bhagat Singh State Technical Campus, Ferozepur organised Essay writing competition aimed at ensuring that every eligible youth is enrolled and every enrolled voter goes to polling booth to use his fundamental right. The entire exercise was focussed on sensitizing voters about the importance of participating in the electoral process as a way to ensure a responsive, accountable and democratically elected government. In a democracy, a free and fair vote is the fundamental tool through which citizens can express their political preferences and developmental wishes. The event was organised to create awareness among the voters as per the directions of Election Commission of India as the Vidhan Sabha elections are barely months away.
The first prize was given to Mr. Arpit Kumar of third year Mechanical Engineering, who mentioned in his essay that for the success of democracy an alert and well informed voter is a prerequisite condition. He also mentioned that “Voters are the key players of democracy. It can easily be assumed that each vote casted strengthens the democracy and the vote not casted or misused weakens the same.” The Prize Distribution ceremony was chaired by Prof Gazal Preet Arneja, Principal Poly Wing. He told the gathering that the democratic system in India is based on the principle of the universal adult suffrage; and that any citizen over the age of 18 years can vote in an election.
The entire event was designed to reach out to youth in an effort to mobilise them to participate in the 2017 elections. Youth in India have in the past not actively taken part in electoral processes as a result of lack of knowledge of the importance of their participation.
