Ferozepur, November 30, 2023: Working swiftly on a tip-off to the jail said, three search operations were carried out in the blocks and barracks of the central jail on a tip-off the jail staff, and the alert staff seized 4 mobiles, 2 data cables, 63 sachets of zarda, bidis from the six packets thrown inside the jail over the high walls from the outside.

The recovery of mobiles from the jail is not only in India but is a worldwide problem, being the most wanted gadgets in the jail, as being in possession of a working mobile phone may also give an inmate an element of power within a prison which can be used for personal benefit. A cell phone can become a currency to be exchanged, which can contribute to violence, hence perpetuating illegality and insecurity.  Moreover, dangerous inmates have been known to use illegal cell phones to direct criminal activity despite the fact that they are confined within penitentiary facilities.

As phones have continued to become physically smaller and more advanced they have also become common and popular contraband.  However, the reaching of mobiles and other banned items continued to find a place in the Central Jail, giving access to the prisoners, is a matter of concern, from a security point of view.  The recovery of mobiles has crossed 500 mobiles from the jail, during the current year.

In three different search operations carried out in the Central Jail, one mobile was recovered from block number 3, barrack number 1, with a battery and SIM Card, hidden in the barrack.  In the second search, 6 packets were thrown from outside between tower number 7 and 8, and on opening, 60 sachets of ‘zarda’ and three plackets of ‘bidis’ were found.  In the third such search carried out by Jasvir Singh, Assistant Superintendent, two mobiles, one each from under trial prisoner Gautam and prisoner Sourav were recovered while the third mobile and two data cables with battery and SIM card were found lying unclaimed.

In all three recoveries, Gurmail Singh has been appointed as IO and further investigations are on.  However, we have tightened the security at the entry points inside and in the open outside the jail premises, said the Jail Superintendent.
