DC Ferozepur distributes kits to 30 reformed drug addicts after completing skill courses
Ferozepur, June 9, 2022: Taking a unique initiative, Chairman-cum-Deputy Commissioner, Amrit Singh handed over kits to 30 reformed drug addicts after completing skill courses, which were launched with the aim of protecting the youth from drug addiction and putting them on their feet skilling them with three months training as a plumber.
Punjab’s first Free Skill Training Centre in Ferozepur for the rehabilitation of drug addicts was inaugurated on September 2, 2019.
Speaking on the occasion, DC said, “Entering the world of substance abuse is easy, but quitting can be dreadfully painful. Quitting drugs is probably going to be one of the hardest things one can do but with strong will one can overcome it. Only by getting the treatment with strong will-power, one can overcome addiction and start a normal life after getting the skill training”.
District Bureau of Employment and Enterprises (DBEE) and Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM) have been urging the registered youth in the OOAT – outpatient opioid assisted treatment – Center at the Civil Hospital to visit the Center every morning and give up drugs.
Some of the youngsters responded positively and expressed their desire to learn the skill. Out of these, a special skill course of 30 de-addicted youths was started. All the 30 trained after successful completion of the course have been placed in the district either under some employment or as a self-employed scheme, said Harmesh Kumar, District Employment Generation Skill Development.
The 30 reformed youths will soon script their own success stories when they have shunned the path of drugs, said Gurjant Singh Placement Officer.
One of the reformed drug addicts said, when I think of my past, I feel ashamed of myself. My family is now happy to see the new me and I express gratitude to the district administration.
