13 drug peddlers including woman held with heroin and habit-forming drugs
Ferozepur, September 16, 2022: In a campaign against the drug peddlers, to make the Punjab drug-free state, the Ferozepur police have arrested 13 drug peddlers including one woman with 413 gm heroin and 1,590 habit-forming drugs, from different locations in the district.
Despite security forces alarmed at the rising involvement of women in drug peddling in the border region, the involvement of drugs in women trade continued to be a matter of serious concern. In the past there had been a number of cases when women have been booked for possession or peddling of drugs and psychotropic substances. Not only this, the BSF had also deployed women guards to frisk local women who used to beyond the barbed fencing to tend to the fields along the Indo-Pak border. In fact, the drug lobbies and cross-border agencies have been intentionally alluring women, as quick money are driving women to drug smuggling and this trend has seen a rising graph in the past also.
As per the details, the accused arrested with recovery are – Rakesh Kumar of Ferozepur Cantt 60 gm heroin, Sahil of Ferozepur Cantt with 10 gm, Sahil son of Sunny with 20 gm, Bittu Kumar of Talwandi Bhai with 90 gm, Jaspal Singh of Arif Ke with 26 gm, Ram Singh with 60 gm, Sandeep and Sameul of Zira with 127 gm, Jatinder Singh and Beant with 20 gm of Zira, Rani of Mamdot with 1005 lose habit forming drugs, Babbu Singh of Gurharsahai with 585 intoxicant tablets.
All have been booked under NDPS Act and in each case, an Inquiry Officers have been appointed to conduct an in-depth investigation, before submitting a report, with backward and forward history, especially to crack the suppliers’ nexus.
There is a need to provide employment opportunities for women belonging to the poor section so that they do not fall in the trap of drug trade, said Pardeep Dhawan, President Senior Citizens Forum.
