Zira farmer commits suicide for not finding name in Waiver Certificates list
Ferozepur, February 1, 2019: Not finding his name in debt waiver certificates list, Baj Singh, 33, a small farmer of Bulle village in Zira sub-division, took the extreme step and committed suicide.
The deceased had only two-acre land and was under a debt of more than Rs.7 lakh. He had borrowed this amount from banks and commission agents.
Divulging with details, Didar Singh, Sarpanch of the village said that Baj Singh was too expecting his name in the waiver’s list but his name was the mission. Shocking with this information, he took some poisonous substance on January 29 evening to end his life. He was rushed to the hospital but could not survive despite medical treatment. Baj Singh is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
The farmers’ outfits have termed the loan waiver scheme as half baked move. The small farmers who badly debt-ridden could have been on the priority list and could not get loan waiver certificates due to some political vendetta, which has put a big question mark on debt waiver scheme of the Punjab government.
