Railways prove its Lifeline of India tag, moves 762 goods during lockdown period
Ferozepur, May 13, 2020: With movement of 762 goods trains during the lockdown period for transportation of essential commodities, Indian Railways have proved its tag of Lifeline of India.
Northern Railways transported 18 lac MTs foodgrains – wheat, rice, potato and other products – through 762 goods trains between March 22 to May 12, through Food Corporation of India, to various other deficit states, during the lockdown period.
Indian railways is playing a pivotal role to ensure the supplies of essential commodities during the lockdown in the wake of coronavirus threat.
DRM Ferozepur Rajesh Aggarwal said, the railways are making all efforts to ensure that farm products like foodgrains are picked up on time and also to ensure uninterrupted supply chain. The loading, transportation and unloading of these essential commodities have been in progress in full swing during the lockdown period in coordination with Food Corporation of India –FCI.
He said, the demand for transportation products have increased during the lockdown period. Despite shortage of trucks and labour, the divisional teams are working round the clock and in one rake, 84 wagon are loaded against the normal 42 wagons. With these arrangements, the cost is reduced besides saving time and labour.
During the loading operations, medical protocols under Covid-19 for keeping social distancing, wearing of masks, gloves, using the sanitizers besides disinfecting the wagons were taken care of, said DRM.
