PFB holds Educational and Creative Competitions dedicated to Louis Braille
Ferozepur, January 20, 2024: The Progressive Federation for the Blind (PFB) – an institution taking care of visually impaired persons in Punjab – organized an Educational & Creative Competition dedicated to Louis Braille, birth anniversary, which falls on January 4 but celebrated in convenience today at Home for the Blind, in which around 100 blind participated from all over the Punjab.
Anil Gupta, Secretary, PFB – who himself is blind and working as a Music Lecturer by profession – organized the event in association with the local NGOs and sighted member Vipul Narang and staff and students from Dass and Brown School.
Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said, Louis Braille was born on January 4, 1809, in Coupvray, France. At the age of 3, while playing in his father’s shop, Louis injured his eye on a sharp tool. Despite the best care available at the time, infection set in and soon spread to the other eye, leaving him completely blind. Every year Louis Braille’s birth anniversary is celebrated, remembering his invention of the six-raised dots language for the blind.
The first prize was won by Malerkotla students, second by Ludhiana and juniors; and first position was bagged by Red Cross Ujala students.
Jagdip Singh, Principal, Govt Barjindra College, Faridkot who presided over the function in the evening also gifted Rs.5,000 to the PFB and honoured the winners in various events like singing, Braille writing and reading etc.
Ashok Behal, Secretary of Red Cross, V.P.Singh, Ashok Gupta, Treasurer of Home for the Blind, Gopal Krishan Kaushal, National President, Iqbal Singh, Member PFB were present.
