Pak-based Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation celebrates Rajguru’s 116th anniversary in Lahore, calls for recognition in curriculum
Lahore, August 24, 2024: The 116th anniversary of the revolutionary Rajguru, who was executed on March 23, 1931, along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, was commemorated at the Jinnah Lounge of the Lahore High Court Bar. The Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation organised the event and was presided over by Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, the Foundation’s Chairman.
The ceremony included a cake-cutting, with Mian Ghulamullah Khan Joya, Advocate Supreme Court and Member of the Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar, serving as the chief guest. Other notable speakers included Muhammad Sohail, Advocate Supreme Court, Human Rights leader Dr Shahid Naseer, Tawqir Chaudhary Advocate, Shafiq Khokhar Advocate, Junaid Ahmed Pracha Advocate, Imtiaz Wardich Advocate, and Muhammad Arif Khan.
Speakers paid tribute to Rajguru, hailing him as a symbol of courage and sacrifice. They highlighted the historical significance of the Saunders murder case of December 17, 1928, in Lahore’s Anarkali police station, where Rajguru, Bhagat Singh, and Sukhdev were implicated. Although their names were not initially mentioned in the trial, the three were ultimately sentenced to death by the Lahore High Court, despite the court’s role traditionally being limited to issuing black warrants.
The speakers urged both the Pakistani and Indian governments to recognise the contributions of these revolutionaries by including them in their respective national curriculums. They also called for the highest civilian honours, “Nishan-e-Pakistan” by Pakistan and “Bharat Ratna” by India, to be awarded posthumously to Rajguru, Bhagat Singh, and Sukhdev.
