LT COL ABJIT SINGH SEKHON VrC (P)

Lt Col Abjit Singh Sekhon, Vir Chakra (Posthumously) of 7th Battalion The MADRAS Regiment, Ex-Commanding Officer of the Battalion, who always placed the interests of his country and that of the Indian Army above his own life.  Towards ensuring the same, he performed the task assigned to the battalion during “Operation PAWAN” at Urthirapuram, Srilanka.  On 21 Apr 1988, Lt Col Abjit Singh Sekhon fought with 10-14 LTTE militants and led this operation from the front with utter disregard to personal safety.  In the course of the encounter Lt Col Abjit Singh Sekhon alongwith his team encountered heavy fire from LTTE militants, he effectively returned fire and killed one of the militants.  During this time Lt Col Abjit Singh Sekhon struck another militant, but unfortunately Col Sekhon was hit by a bullet and succumbed to his injuries.  This brave officer of 7th MADRAS Regiment was awarded “VIR CHAKRA” (Posthumously) for his supreme sacrifice by Govt of India.

 

A ‘Chowk’ is named on the name of this brave officer of the Indian Army at his native town Faridkot (Punjab).  “Shaheed Lt Col Abjit Singh Sekhon Chowk”.  Wreath laying ceremony was conducted to commemorate his sacrifice on 21 Apr 2016, where the officer was presented a guard of honour by the Army dignities and civil authorities alongwith a team of JCOs and Jawans of his Battalion, the 7th Bn of the MADRAS Regiment to pay homage and respect to their brave Commanding Officer.  Mrs Kamaljeet Sekhon, Director Dasmesh Public School, Faridkot, wife of the martyr officer alongwith his son
Capt SS Sekhon were also present to pay the homage and respect the officer.
