LIBRARY LANGAR DRAWS BIG RESPONSE FROM THE STUDENTS
FEROZEPUR, July 14, 2021: The happiness of Khushi , an 11th standard student in a government school at Village Khushal Singh Wala, knows no bound when she selects the Punjabi version of Maxim Gorki’s ‘Mother’ from the bundle of books her teacher has brought for at her home. Khusi had lost her mother in her childhood. The very title of the book ‘Maa’ ignites a desire in her to read the book. She has got this book during the “Library Langar” organized by her school for the students.
As many as 33024 students studying in government schools in Ferozepur must be ecstatic to get a book or two during the unique initiative by Education Department Punjab to hold Library Langar to promote the habit of reading books among the students studying in government schools. A total of 227 government schools held this book feast at prominent places of the villages and a total of 45214 books were issued to the students.
While informing about this novel idea of holding ‘Library Langar’, District Education Officer (DEO), Kulwinder Kaur said that waning habit of reading books among the younger generation is a major cause of worry for the teachers. There are a few takers for the wonderful collection of books lying in the safes of libraries. To evoke an interest in the books, the teachers in our schools decided to bring books to the doorsteps of the students, who have enough time at their disposal to read as the schools are still closed due to the corona threat.
Deputy DEO Komal Arora, praised the efforts of the teachers for making the initiative a success. He hoped that the students would read these books and share their response or thought about the books. This initiative has gathered a huge response and we are looking forward to hold such useful events in future too.
English DM Gurwinder Singh said that reading books holds special significance for students. They are the true treasure and the best friends. They are not to be lying defunct in libraries. They are to be read. Holding book fairs and library langars will become a staple part of our school activities, maintains Gurwinder Singh.
