Farmer who attempted to commit suicide dies during treatment at hospital, in Ferozepur
Need to make thorough study of suicide cases for solution
Ferozepur, May 1, 2016: A farmer – Surjit Singh, 65 son of Hakam Singh, a resident of village Waryam Singh Wala – who allegedly attempted to commit suicide by consuming pesticide on Saturday, died in the hospital.
Yesterday, Surjit, immediately on consuming the poisonous substance, was rushed to the private hospital where he died today. He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. The dead body was handed over to the family after the post mortem.
As per the sources, Surjit was running under debt.
Another farmer Buta Singh, who had earlier attempted two times to commit suicide but survived with timely action by the members of the family, died in road accident today by jumping on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road when heavy traffic was following.
According to DSP Guruharsahai, Sulakhan Singh, the investigation is still on and initially it is difficult to confirm that it is a suicidal case.
Added here, the poverty is not new to India neither in debt. The increase in number of suicides by the farmers in Punjab is a serious concern. Activists and scholars have offered a number of conflicting reasons for farmer suicides, such as monsoon failure, high debt burdens, genetically modified crops, government policies, public mental health, personal issues and above all, family problems.
When old timer banker retiree, Manohar Lal contacted, he said, giving compensation to the family of a farmer who commits suicide is not the solution. He further said, “To address farmer distress in India, there is a need to make a ground level study of the suicide cases and educate the farmers to use the loans for the purpose the same has been taken, to come at a conclusion.”
