Dr Ambuj Sharma's Book “Unraveling Gandhi’s Alternative Modernity: A Philosophical Debate on Caste and Gender intends to explore the Gandhian understanding and vision on caste, gender and modernity with a view to envision an ideal society. It focuses on the way in which the basic problems of morality, politics and spiritual life are conceived in Gandhian philosophy from a philosophical and theoretical perspective, which in turn, is formed by the Gandhian exemplar of the ethical and cultural transformations of the Indian state.
He further said this Book aims to contribute to the debate on the issues of caste, gender and modernity by examining the underlying metaphysical, ethical and axiological issues therein. Though a veritable literature has appeared as a rejoinder to Gandhian thought, yet the present exercise is a humble attempt to re-appropriate and re-look at Gandhian views on caste, gender and modernity in a distinctive way as the present topic is of serious philosophical nature that demands further exploration and critiquing.
