7 throws tossed in Ferozepur jail containing banned items
Complex problems require a comprehensive solution
Problems caused by technology need to be tackled by new technology
Ferozepur, March 22, 2024: The recovery of mobiles, banned items, and throwing of packets from outside over the high walls is unabated in Ferozepur jail despite three layers of security checks and deployment of around 200 security staff. During random inspections, the recovery of mobile phones and various kinds of intoxicants from Central jails in Punjab has raised a serious concern.
It is also proved without a doubt that mobiles and other banned items find their way inside the high-security jails and the connivance of the security staff cannot be ruled out. Despite tall claims of the police department that foolproof security has been provided in the Central jails, there has been no let-up in the cases of recoveries of mobile phones and other material from inmates. It is a complex problem that requires a more comprehensive solution and only with strict vigil and actions, the recoveries of banned items in the jail can be stopped or reduced to some extent. It looks to be a problem caused by technology and there is a need to evolve a technology that should be discovered to tackle it.
During the search operation carried out on March 21 of barrack number 3, one mobile with a battery and SIM card was recovered from under-trial prisoner Kuldeep Singh of Habib Ke. In another recovery, the 7 throws over the high walls of the jail from outside were found and on its opening, 36 packets of tobacco, 5 bundles of bidis, 13 packs of cigarettes, and 60 sachets of ‘zarda’ were seized.
There had been 91 throws including the 7 on March 21 and recovery of more than 100 mobiles, during the current year. With easy smuggling of mobiles and banned items, the prisoners are in constant touch with the outer world and the purpose of keeping the criminals behind bars is lost.
Meanwhile a case against the under trial prisoner already in the jail and unknown person has been registered under Prisons and further investigations are on.
